Steps To A Successful Campaign
- Start at the top. There is no substitute for CEO and upper manangement support.
- Recruit a great committee. Start early, cultivate enthusiasm, and meet often.
- Set a goal that is both challenging and realistic. (This is possible.) Promote it.
- Establish a firm schedule for your campaign, and stick to it.
- Incentives work. If you feed them, they will come!
- And it seems people will do virtually anything for a free t-shirt.
- Keep it simple and make it FUN. Be creative.
- Prepare well for solicitations. Make the "ask" as personal as possible.
- Ask for all pledge cards to be returned, regardless of giving decision.
- Measure your progress & report it regularly throughout your campaign.
- Report your results. Celebrate them!
- Have the committee meet one last time to de-brief & plan for next year.
- Very important...say "thank you."

Old Dominion Freight Line Wins Community Spirit Award from United Way
The United Way of Greater High Point has announced that Old Dominion Freight Line has received the 2009 Community Spirit Award. Old Dominion’s 2009 United Way campaign raised $265,122, which includes a $25,000 corporate gift and $237,260 in employee contributions. An additional $2,862 was raised through special events such as bake sales and “Jeans Days.”
“Community spirit is a big part of the culture of giving at Old Dominion,” said Dee Dee Cox, Director of Human Resource Development at ODFL and one of the organizers of the company’s United Way campaign. “These days, everyone knows someone in need, and at Old Dominion we care about our neighbors as if they were family.”

Cornerstone Health Care Wins Outstanding Campaign Award from United Way
The United Way of Greater High Point has announced that Cornerstone Health Care has received the 2009 Outstanding Campaign Award. Cornerstone’s 282 United Way donors raised $112,899 in employee giving to support local health and human service needs, with an average employee gift of $400. $3,283 was also raised through special events organized by employees, including “dress down days” and bakes sales.

Local Residents Win As Belk Incentive Helps Boost United Way Campaign
For the third year in a row, Belk at Oak Hollow Mall offered the United Way of Greater High Point two incentives to help encourage donations in the organization’s residential mailing campaign. The Results for 2009: 80 existing donors gave $5,406.30 in increased gifts AND 76 NEW brand new donors gave $13,036.60 in the recently-concluded 2009 campaign.

This is a Grand Total of $18,442.90 in NEW dollars added to the 2009 campaign! These incentives over the last three years have also produced over $63,000 in new and increased giving to the United Way of Greater High Point.

Jeff Karpovich, Director of Security and Transportation at High Point University, drew the winning key at the 2009 Vann York United Way Car Giveaway! Jeff was one of ten finalists selected from over 3,300 “Fair Share” givers to the United Way of Greater High Point.

Harrison’s “Celebrity Waiters” Event Raises $825 for United Way
Leah Penry Price, the 2009 Campaign Chair for the United Way of Greater High Point, Scott Cherry, Head Basketball Coach at High Point University, and Neil McNeill, evening news anchor at WGHP FOX 8, waited tables and earned $825 in a portion of the restaurant’s proceeds, plus tips, for the United Way of Greater High Point on October 13th.
We really appreciate everyone who came out to support us at Harrison’s,” said Leah Price, the 2009 Campaign Chair. “This event was a fun way that United Way’s supporters helped us get a bit closer to our campaign goal.” Organizers also expressed their appreciation to Harrison’s for hosting the event.
The United Way of Greater High Point, which kicked off its 2009 fund-raising campaign on September 17, has a 2009 campaign goal of $4,500,000. UWGHP funding supports local 29 partner agencies serving High Point, Archdale, Trinity, and Jamestown.

A note from our Campaign Chair...
Thanks to the support of our caring community, the United Way of Greater High Point funds 70 local programs that help children learn and families thrive, help individuals and families achieve self-sufficiency, and improve the health and safety of High Point, Archdale, Trinity, and Jamestown.
On September 17th I had the pleasure of “kicking off” the 2009 United Way campaign where we announced an ambitious campaign goal of $4,500,000, and participated in a “truck pull” that demonstrated the power we possess we all work together towards a common goal.
As I began to think about the challenge that lies ahead of us, one thought particularly struck me. Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass; it is about learning to dance in the rain. We are in the midst of the greatest storm known to our generation. Do we wait until the uncertainty passes to live, to give, to make commitments, to dance? Or for those of us who can, do we choose to live, and in the case of United Way, to step up and give, to support our neighbors in need?
Local needs have increased exponentially in recent months, and the faces of those “in need” are changing. What if it was your daughter that needed the family crisis center because of domestic violence, or your mother that needed hospice for her final days, or your brother who needed shelter or counseling, or your nephew who needed child care or a mentor to lift him to a greater life?
While we are off to an encouraging start, to achieve this year’s goal, we are going to need everyone’s help. If you haven’t already, please commit to your 2009 donation, so that United Way’s 29 partner agencies are able to continue to provide life-changing and life-saving benefits to so many in our community. Every dollar matters in this effort, and every single donation is appreciated and well-used.
On behalf of the United Way of Greater High Point, and particularly those served by its 29 partner agencies, I extend our heartfelt thanks to all the generous citizens who support our United Way with their donations and volunteerism. After all, underneath everything we are, underneath everything we do, we are all connected, interdependent, United.
And when we reach out a hand to one, we can influence the condition of all.
That’s what it means to LIVE UNITED.

Local - Donations are raised locally and allocated locally to help provide for the health and human service needs of citizens in our community.
Efficient - United Way provides giving opportunities to many local non-profit organizations under one fund-raising effort, reducing multiple appeals and wasteful duplication.
Local United Ways and their volunteer leadership also work very hard to keep administrative costs (overhead) as low as possible. United Way has one of the lowest rates around.
Accountability - Volunteers from your our area determine how to apportion dollars raised to various local partner agencies providing critical health and human services. If you'd like to be a part of this process, please let us know!
