High Point University and United Way of Greater High Point present The Bob Brown Scholarship!

Applications are being accepted for the Bob Brown Scholarship, established by United Way of Greater High Point and High Point University, for students residing in the greater High Point area. The scholarship is specifically designated for incoming freshmen who are involved with a United Way agency, either as a volunteer or a client.

The Bob Brown Scholarship was established to recognize the life and service of Robert J. Brown. A native of High Point, Brown is founder of the premier consulting group, B & C Associates. He has worked with notable leaders such as Robert Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Nelson Mandela, and Martin Luther King Jr. Mr. Brown also founded South African BookSmart Foundation, which supports public relations, civil rights, emergency preparedness, and daycare in third-world countries. The recipient of numerous awards and citations, Brown was also recognized as the High Point Enterprise Citizen of the Year in 2005.

The Bob Brown Scholarship provides one incoming freshman with a $5,000 annual scholarship to High Point University, renewable for four consecutive years, for a total of $20,000. (The University’s Financial Planning Department will assist the recipient in securing additional financial aid in order to meet the school’s annual tuition and associated fees.)

Applicants must be admitted to HPU by the April 15th application deadline. They must also complete the Bob Brown United Way Scholarship application and follow its additional guidelines and requirements, including a letter of reference from a United Way partner agency and active involvement in a local United Way partner agency, either as a volunteer or a client. A joint committee of United Way and High Point University officials will select the recipient each year.

Application deadline: April 15th, 2010

Last year's winner was Joyce Gomez of High Point, who was an active member of the Boys & Girls Clubs of High Point for many years. Joyce is currently studying Biology at HPU with a goal of becoming a pediatrician.
